PLC network troubleshooting is the process of separating physical, addressing, infrastructure, protocol, and project-configuration causes. A device may have a link light and still have a failed cyclic connection, so use a layered diagnostic sequence.
Physical checks
Confirm device power, link/activity indicators, cable seating, switch port, cabinet conditions, and recent changes. Follow site procedures and do not disturb production connections without authorization.
Addressing and identity
Check IP address, subnet, gateway, duplicate-address risk, device name, controller path, and project identity. A replacement device with the old label but a different address can create confusing symptoms.
Switches and topology
Review managed-switch port status, VLAN, speed, errors, power, and topology documentation. Avoid assuming that an office switch configuration is suitable for a control network.
Protocol and project
Compare module profile, firmware, electronic keying, connection settings, packet behavior, and data mapping. For EtherNet/IP-specific context, read What is EtherNet/IP?.
Verify the correction
Record the original fault, correct one cause at a time, and test normal load, startup, device loss, and recovery. TechControl provides industrial troubleshooting for existing PLC networks.
