RSLogix 500 and Studio 5000 are associated with different generations of Allen-Bradley controllers and project models. The software choice follows the controller family; it is not simply a preference between two versions of the same application.
RSLogix 500
RSLogix 500 is commonly associated with MicroLogix and SLC 500 projects. These projects often use data files and address-based elements familiar to technicians who maintain legacy machines.
Studio 5000
Studio 5000 Logix Designer is used with Logix-family controllers such as CompactLogix and ControlLogix. Projects use controller and program tags, tasks, routines, module profiles, and modern communications structures.
Important differences
| Area | RSLogix 500 | Studio 5000 |
|---|---|---|
| Typical families | MicroLogix and SLC 500 | CompactLogix and ControlLogix |
| Data model | Address/data-file oriented | Tag and program oriented |
| Migration | Legacy project constraints | Requires mapping and validation |
Do not treat migration as a file conversion
A machine conversion must account for I/O, timing, addressing, motion, communications, HMI tags, safety, and operator behavior. Preserve the original backup and test the converted sequence. See Allen-Bradley PLC migration.
TechControl supports PLC programming and modernization of existing control systems.
